Dear Collierville Schools Families and Staff,
It is hard to believe we are already in November and just three weeks away from Thanksgiving Break. This time of year always seems to move quickly, but there is still a lot happening across our schools before we get there.
Our Capturing Kids’ Hearts word for November is Teamwork, and I think it is a fitting word for our schools. Every day, our students are learning what it means to work together, support one another, listen to different ideas, and understand that we can often accomplish more when we work as a team.
One of the best parts of my job is getting out into our schools, and I have really enjoyed spending time in classrooms this year. It gives me the opportunity to see firsthand the work our teachers and staff are doing every day and, more importantly, to see our students learning, creating, asking questions, working together, and taking pride in what they are accomplishing. Those visits are always a good reminder of just how much goes into making our schools successful.
As we move through these next few weeks, I hope our students will continue putting teamwork into practice, both in the classroom and beyond. I am grateful for the role our families play as part of that team as well. The partnership between our students, families, teachers, staff, and community is an important part of what makes Collierville Schools such a special place.
I hope everyone has a great November, and I look forward to seeing even more of the great work happening across our schools in the weeks ahead.
Sincerely,
Dr. Russell Dyer
Director of Schools

Burke's selection marks the second consecutive year a Collierville Schools educator has earned Tennessee's highest teaching honor, following Collierville High School math teacher Dr. Brandi De La Cruz's recognition as the 2025-26 Tennessee Teacher of the Year. With Burke's selection, Collierville Schools becomes the first Tennessee school district in 50 years to produce back-to-back Tennessee Teachers of the Year.
Burke, who has been teaching at SyCamore Elementary since 2017, is known for her energetic, creative, and deeply intentional STEM classroom where students feel seen, challenged, empowered, and excited to learn.
Congratulations, Ms. Burke!

Former Board member and current Tennessee State Representative Kevin Vaughan also presented her with a proclamation from the Tennessee House of Representatives.
The recognition continued with the Town of Collierville and Mayor Maureen Fraser declaring October 29, 2026, as Wanda Chism Day in honor of her service to Collierville Schools and the Collierville community.

Civics education is an essential part of any democracy and equips students with the knowledge and tools to responsibly engage as productive citizens within their communities. Districts and schools can play a meaningful role in the work to support students’ foundational knowledge and preparedness for civic life – all key components of 21st century skills. Recognizing the importance of civics values and education, Governor Bill Lee announced the “Governor’s Civics Seal” during his first State of the State address on March 4, 2019. Additionally, the Tennessee General Assembly passed HB0944/SBO800, which amended T.C.A. 49-6-1028 and officially established the Governor’s Civics Seal.

When Bailey Station Elementary’s aging cafeteria sound system finally stopped working, Michael Hernandez stepped in to help. What turned into a lengthy process with vendor setbacks could have easily become frustrating, but Michael persevered.
He kept the school informed throughout the process, worked through the challenges, found a new vendor when the original plan fell through, and followed the project all the way to completion.
Michael’s persistence, communication, and follow-through made a real difference for Bailey Station Elementary. Thank you, Michael, for seeing the project through and for all you do to support our schools!

Collierville High School was excited to welcome Mr. Michael Cox, a CHS Class of 1993 graduate, to Mr. Todd Campbell's AP Literature class last month!
The son of legendary CHS football coach Paul Cox, Michael is a graduate of the University of Alabama and Stanford University and the author of three books, including his newest crime novel, Montecito.
His message to aspiring writers was simple but powerful: "If you have a creative instinct in you, this is a way to let it out."
We are grateful to Mr. Cox for taking the time to share his experiences, inspire our students, and remind us that no matter where life takes you, there is something special about coming home.
Once a Dragon, Always a Dragon!

Congratulations to Kate Cantrell, Collierville High School's Patriot Bank Student of the Month! Kate is the kind of student who leads by example. As Student Government President, she helps lead a school community of more than 3,000 students, but what truly sets her apart is her heart for serving others. Through organizations like Young Life, Best Buddies, Capernaum, Special Friends, her church, and community service projects, Kate is always looking for ways to encourage, include, and support those around her.
Kate's dedication extends to the classroom, where she maintains a 4.1+ GPA, has earned a 5 on the AP Language and Composition exam, and holds certifications in welding and electrical technology. Whether she's leading her peers, serving her community, or pursuing her academic goals, Kate makes a positive impact wherever she goes. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition, Kate!

Peter and the Starcatcher upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be Peter Pan. From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher playfully explores the depths of greed and despair, and the bonds of friendship, duty, and love.
A young orphan and his mates are shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, which contains a precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training who realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful that it must never fall into the wrong hands. When the ship is taken over by pirates – led by the fearsome Black Stache, a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own – the journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure.
