Happy November, CMS Dragon families!
Collierville Middle School will have its annual Veteran’s Day program on Monday, November 11th, at 9:00 am in the gym. We will pay tribute to all branches of our Armed Forces. We are asking students to invite their family members and friends who are Veterans or Active Duty to join them for this program. Guests are asked to park at the rear of the school and proceed directly to the CMS Gym to join their students. Sign in sheets will be located near the gym entrance.
In past years we have collected dry goods to be sent to our troops overseas. While this is a worthy endeavor, we are going to be doing something a little different this year. This year we are going to partner with Forever Young Senior Veterans; their mission is “to end the silent suffering of military veterans 65 years and older by granting their unfulfilled dreams, returning them to the places where they fought, and giving them the honor, healing, and hope they need and deserve.” This coming spring Forever Young will be taking a group of World War II Veterans back to Normandy to revisit the places where they fought. We are so excited to share that Collierville Middle is sponsoring one of those heroes returning to Normandy.
Our Veteran: Irwin Rumler is a Veteran of the D-Day invasion of Normandy. Mr. Rumler flew bombing missions during D-Day in his B-24 Liberator. During the course of the war, Mr. Rumler lost most of his hearing. Our goal, as a school, is to raise enough money to cover the cost of Mr. Rumler’s airplane ticket back to Normandy. The cost of that ticket is roughly $1,500. That may seem like a big number, but if every student donates between $3 and $5 we can cover Mr. Rumler’s flight and help Forever Young Senior Veterans continue to serve our Veterans. It is difficult to put into words how important these return trips are for these heroes. Please consider giving what you can to this worthy cause. If you know of community members who might like to assist with this effort, please feel free to share this information with them.
Please send donations to your Homeroom teacher between Nov. 11th and Nov. 15th. Please make checks payable to Collierville Middle with “Forever Young” in the notes.
