Thursday and Friday IC: Students reviewed main idea and figurative language with IXL C.6 and G.1. The Standard class also chose a text they wanted to read out of Study Sync, and standard ELA chose The Lord of the Flies excerpt. We began reading the excerpt and will continue working with it over the next week, while also completing a narrative timed write in class.

Tuesday IC: As early bird, students read the FD novel for a few minutes. We then did a QUICK CHECK reading check with "Echo and Narcissus" and a "Modern Day Narcissus." We read the passages together and then students answered questions about the two texts. To wrap it up, as a whole class, we practiced identifying allusions with 10th grade IXL practice.

Monday IC: We analyzed the poem "The Hangman" today, identifying symbolism, allusions, and other figurative language used in the poem. IXL H.1 and H.2 were due today.

Wednesday IC: I shared one of Matt de la Pena's books with the students entitled, Last Stop on Market Street. The author, Mr. Pena, is coming to CMS to speak to the students tomorrow. Mr. Pena is also speaking at CHS tonight from 6:30-7:30, and this is a free event for the community. After reading his book, we did a close read of the FD novel and discussed THINK questions.

Thursday IC: Hook statements were shared and a couple thesis statements were shared. A couple exemplar introduction paragraphs from the Satchel Paige/Rosa Parks Essay were shared as well to show the students what good writing looks like. Students then worked on their Body 1 paragraphs.

Wednesday IC: We reviewed/read "Abuela Invents the Zero"; students then began a graphic organizer for the Q1 Extended Writing Assignment, choosing the three texts and the characters/people that will be discussed in their essays. Monday IC: TKAM mid-term test today; after the test, students read "Mother to Son." After reading the poem "Mother to Son" students developed a universal theme for the poem and found evidence from the poem that supported that theme.
